Let’s get into it, another edition of Cars & Kopi. The third meet of the year, and one that has a hint of Mercedes-Benz AMG flavour with the local MB dealership showcasing a trio of AMG-powered machinery.

Kinja'd!!!

I’m not sure how the year has been for you all but with just 2 more months till Christmas, it sure has shot by me rather rapidly. Hopefully, we will be able to string together another meet before the year ends, allowing Cars & Kopi to finally become a quarterly event. Till then, thanks everyone for making this happen, thanks for making these meets enjoyable, thanks for keeping things sane for everyone and thanks for keeping our little niche of automotive culture alive. It wouldn’t be Cars & Kopi without all of you who attended.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

The kind people over at AMG gave us full access to their GLC63S (Sans test drive of course).

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

With BMW’s X3M yet to be unveiled, those wanting a small-mid-ish sized chunk of metal with monster power will have to contend with either a Porsche Macan Turbo or one of these. I know which one I’d rather have.

Kinja'd!!!

The more powerful, quicker and slightly more “affordable” one, with an engine built by Daniel. Personally, I think it looks more ballsy than a Macan too.

Kinja'd!!!

Our morning started off early but with rain falling of certain parts of the island, the initial morning turnout was looking rather, modest.

Kinja'd!!!

But it didn’t take long for the dark clouds to depart, allowing for more colours started to show up.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Still kicking yourself for missing that Air-cooled boat? Yea, me too. Everyday.

Kinja'd!!!

When I was a young boy, I constantly craved a Ferrari or Lamborghini. Nowadays though, I find myself coveting old Porsches.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Of course, that doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate a seductive mature Italian lady once in a while.

Kinja'd!!!

Breakdown. Takedown. You’re Busted!

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

There’s just something about these old Italian girls don’t you think? A delicacy in their design I just cannot put my finger on.

Kinja'd!!!

I reckon I was not the only one feeling that way.

Kinja'd!!!

How do you say patina in Italian? Pur-tee- na - reh (while gesturing with all fingers closed in an upward motion)?

Kinja'd!!!

Their slightly more modern lineup isn’t too bad either. At least, from an emotional standpoint.

Kinja'd!!!

It’s been a really long time since i last saw a Brera Coupe on the streets. They’ve pretty much gone extinct here.

Kinja'd!!!

Speaking of rare autos, a lovely red E30 cab turned in and I just had to shuffle my old jalopy over for a photo-op.

Kinja'd!!!

Well plaid.

Kinja'd!!!

Going by the chatter on the internets, this GTR34 was the highlight for many! I really cannot argue with that. It was wearing BBS LMs.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

How’s that for a 2-car garage lineup?

Kinja'd!!!

From one dream car to the next, (and one set of BBS wheels to another), here’s a beautiful Z4M Coupe sitting on BBS LM-Rs. Perfect combo finish.

Kinja'd!!!

Hand me the keys to one of these and I promise I’ll be content.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

I can make do with one of these too. I’m not picky.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Colin who?

Kinja'd!!!

The obligatory Cars & Kopi money shot.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Great looking 997 GT3 on Advan wheels. Tasty.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Beemer, Benz and Bent… Oh sorry, no Bentleys today.

Kinja'd!!!

How about something a little much more uncommon? This Ford Focus RS.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

The always very sizeable JDM crew.

Kinja'd!!!

I’m probably one of the least knowledgeable people with regards to 350Z aero, but I think this car is either running Nismo or Amuse body bits. It looked pretty cool though.

Kinja'd!!!

Of course we can’t show nostalgic JDMs without throwing this Kenmeri in!

Kinja'd!!!

Lovely isn’t she? And an interesting showcase of contrasting design styles.

Kinja'd!!!

Tastefully done Mazda 3/Axela, sitting on choice Enkei RPF1s.

Kinja'd!!!

Why so serious?

Kinja'd!!!

This little pink number shows you can have automotive fun without having to throw down big bucks.

Kinja'd!!!

Was anyone able to spot which photos were taken with a mirrorless camera and which were taken with my little Huawei P20 Pro phone?

I understand new cars are insane, how much to register a an 80s 911?

does it decrease with age?

You can’t register a foreign (or imported)  80s Porsche for regular street use here. The only way to is do so on a classic car license (scheme), but that will require said car to be at least 35 years of age or older. Which will mean you can only drive your 911 up to 45 days in a year. Road tax is a flat US$200 a year, insurance is also roughly around there. Doesn’t sound so bad. But I haven’t gone into the taxes just yet.

If you already own your 911, then things are probably easier, especially if you’ve had your car for a few years already. Because import tax (payable to the customs tax office), is 20% of your car’s value (how much you paid for it, which is why if you’ve owned your car for some time, it’ll be reduced quite a bit).

Then there’s the dreaded certificate of entitlement (COE), which for cars under the classic scheme is not as bad as it sounds because it is 10% of the current COE’s previous 3 month’s average. The COE operates under a bidding system so values fluctuate quite a bit. Today, the COE hovers around US$22,000. So a COE for your classic 911 will be 10% of that, US$2,200 .

Then there’s the local registration fee of around US$160.

And then now we get to the big one. The “Additional” registration fee (ARF), this is pretty much another tax that’s based on the value (what you paid) for your auto and it goes by percentages. Stay with me because this one gets confusing and the numbers run up pretty quickly.

For the first US$14,000 (SGD$20,000) you pay a 100% tax on it. So if your car’s value is say US$5,000. You get slapped on with another US$5,000 worth of tax. This is simple enough. But if your car exceeds that threshold, prepare yourself.

For the next US$21,000 (SGD$30,000) worth of your car’s value (meaning the $$$ between US$14,001 to US$35,000), the tax is 140%. Which means if you paid US$28,000 for your car. Your first US$14,000 will be taxed at 100%. Thereafter, the next $14,000 after that will be hit with the 140%. Clear enough?

If your car breaks the US$35,000 (SGD$50,000) threshold. Good luck to you because anything above that amount is a 180% Tax. Therefore, if you bought a baller old Ferrari something-something for say, US$50,000. Your tax would be 100% of the first US$14,000 + 140% of the next US$21,000 + 180% of everything after that, in this case, 180% of US$15,000.

Total that up and if you’ve bought yourself a US$50,000 80s Ferrari or an awesome condition 911 something something for the same amount, your additional registration fee (tax) comes to a lovely US$70,400. Soooo... add that all up and you will have to cough up... US$83,160 in taxes, insurance and registration fees alone, not including the price of your car and not including your shipping fees.

Still keen?

I will never understand why anyone has these cars in Singapore. There was a point where the most expensive car I’d ever been in was a Corolla in Singapore.

Where and when does this take place and how can I find out more? I don’t get to Singapore often, but wouldn’t mind stopping by when I do (my company has an office there) .

Yikes I was waiting for it. At first i thought that it isn’t so bad.

Can you import a junker  and restore it? Or does the car have to be fully operable to import?

It is possible to bring in a not so good condition one and build it up before registration. But there is a specific time frame which I'm not too sure of.

Yes it is. (If you stay in a giant penthouse, or if you are here as a tourist )   :P

Oh another point , to import a car here, it also has to be RHD. I forgot that one .
